The programme of study has been designed to complement the other Motor Vehicle Qualifications and is aimed at both Section and Traffic/Road Policing officers and covers all common defects easily detected at the roadside during routine checks. Emphasis is placed on all Private Light Goods (PLG) up to 7.5t, motorcycles and scooters. Candidates attending this programme will learn about:

In addition to the theoretical aspect of this programme, officers will participate in road side checks during which time they will be required to fully inspect and report on a variety of Private Light Goods Vehicles (PLG) motorcycles and scooters. During the inspection day / evening candidates will be guided, watched, and assessed by tutors. Officers will be expected to:

  • make an informed decision as to the severity of any defect found
  • decide upon what action is necessary
  • use the Categorisation of Defects Manual to confirm their decision
  • provide feedback to the driver/rider of defects found
  • issue the appropriate Prohibition Notice PG9 (Qualified Officer in attendance)
  • adhere to strict health & safety practices

The programme will culminate in a City & Guilds examination and those candidates who successfully complete both theoretical and practical elements will be awarded the ‘City & Guilds Prohibition of Private Light Goods Vehicle’ certificate.
